Meet Claire: Software Developer Intern (Summer 2019)
August 6, 2019Claire, one of our 2019 software developer interns, is finishing her Master’s Degree in Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University.
What project(s) have you focused on this summer?
I am creating custom code for RenewExpress, Grant Street’s online vehicle and vessel registration renewal system. My project will enhance customer service as well as the renewal process.
What is the culture like at Grant Street Group?
Everyone pulls together. It’s great that there’s no hard delineation between “my job” and “your job,” it’s “our job”! The developers and business analysts – whether intern or full-time – collaborate to produce software specifications and development goals. Developers gladly help each other out, as well. If there’s anything someone isn’t sure about, someone else is always ready to have a short call to help iron out the problem.

What one word would you use to describe Grant Street Group?
Comfortable. In the best way possible, everyone’s friendly and flexible. It’s easy to consult with others about work, regardless of their position. Everyone has infinite patience for “intern questions,” so I get to learn a lot about a variety of things.
What have you learned from your internship at Grant Street Group?
The idea of quick prototyping for a demo is something I’ll keep with me. Don’t let perfect get in the way of good. I also learned tips on how to be productive, how to manage your work day, and how to manage a project’s timeline. Little – or maybe not so little – things that you can’t pick up in school.
What do you like to do outside of work?
I love video games, on the PC, on consoles, or handhelds. I also write and enjoy cooking.
